The first Japanese air strike against Darwin took place on February 19, 1942, and was also the first and largest attack carried out by a foreign power against Australia.
In this first assault, 235 Australian military and civilians were killed, nearly 400 were injured, 30 aircraft were destroyed, 8 Australian ships were sunk and 25 ships were seriously damaged. Between February 1942 and November 1943, the Australian continent, domestic airspace, coastal islands and coastal shipping were attacked at least 97 times by aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force.64 of these raids took place in Darwin.
