The battle broke out between United American and Philippine forces against the Japanese occupiers from February 3, 1945 to March 3, 1945 and ended in a terrible bloodbath and total devastation of the city.

It was the scene of the worst urban fighting in the Pacific Theater and ended nearly three years of Japanese military occupation of the Philippines. An estimated 100,000 Manila residents were killed, both deliberately by the Japanese and by US army artillery and air bombardment.
