The Battle of Singapore began when Japan invaded the British fortress of Singapore. Singapore was the main British military base in South-East Asia and was nicknamed “East Gibraltar.”
Fighting in Singapore lasted from February 8, 1942 to February 15, 1942. They resulted in the Japanese capture of Singapore and the largest surrender of British-led military personnel in history.
Approximately 85,000 British, Indian and Australian troops were taken by the Japanese as prisoners of war, joining the 50,000 captured by the Japanese earlier during the Malaysian campaign. The British would liberate Singapore during Operation Tiderace in September 1945.
