This is a picture of a French girl named Blanch Monnier who was kept captive for 25 years in a padlocked dark room by her own family.

She was rescued in 1901, when police received a letter informing about the lady being held hostage.

"Monsieur Attorney General: I have the honor to inform you of an exceptionally serious occurrence. I speak of a spinster who is locked up in Madame Monnier’s house, half starved, and living on a putrid litter for the past twenty-five years – in a word, in her own filth"

The police then went to her home and found her in the worst way imaginable. A statement of the witness describes it appropriately.

"We immediately gave the order to open the casement window. This was done with great difficulty, for the old dark-colored curtains fell down in a heavy shower of dust. To open the shutters, it was necessary to remove them from their right hinges. As soon as light entered the room, we noticed, in the back, lying on a bed, her head and body covered by a repulsively filthy blanket, a woman identified as Mademoiselle Blanche Monnier. The unfortunate woman was lying completely naked on a rotten straw mattress. All around her was formed a sort of crust made from excrement, fragments of meat, vegetables, fish, and rotten bread. We also saw oyster shells and bugs running across Mademoiselle Monnier’s bed. The air was so unbreathable, the odor given off by the room was so rank, that it was impossible for us to stay any longer to proceed with our investigation."



Reason?

When Blanche was 25 years old, she fell in love with a broke lawyer. When her mother and brother came to know about it, they forbade her of the relationship and caged her in a tiny room until she gave up.

EXCEPT SHE NEVER GAVE UP.

At the time of the rescue she was 49 years old and weighed around 55 pounds (~25 kg). Although she did put on some weight over time, she never became stable. She died in a psychiatric hospital 12 years later, in 1913.

Allen Lee Davis  (July 20, 1944 – July 8, 1999) was an American murderer who was executed for the 1982 murder of Nancy Weiler, who was three months pregnant, in Jacksonville, Florida. According to reports, Nancy Weiler was "beaten almost beyond recognition" by Davis with a .357 Magnum, and hit more than 25 times in the face and head. He was additionally convicted of killing Nancy Weiler's two daughters, Kristina, age 9, who was shot twice in the face, and Katherine, age 5, who was shot as she tried to run away and then had her skull beaten in with the gun.
